Read an EPUB online, nothing installed

Most ways to read an .epub ask you for something first: an app to install, an account to make, or the file itself to upload. This one is a page. Drop a book on it and read, and the file stays in your browser.

Free, no sign-up, no upload. Six public-domain classics are already on the shelf if you have no book at hand.

Three steps, about ten seconds

Open the page

The reader loads in any current browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, Chrome OS or a phone.

Add a book

Drag a file onto the page, or click Open book…. No book? Pick one of the six classics on the shelf.

Come back later

The book, your place, your highlights and your notes are in this browser. Reopen the page and carry on where you stopped.

What you get in the tab

The dictionary panel defining a word from the open book
Select a word, click Define

Where the limits are

  • Your library is tied to this browser. Books live in the browser's own storage for this site, so clearing that data deletes them, and another computer starts with an empty shelf. Keep your own copies of anything you care about.
  • The page has to load. There is no offline mode on the web: open it while you are online. The Chrome extension is the same reader and does work with no connection.
  • Copy-protected books do not open, and nothing here removes copy protection.
  • Read aloud is three minutes a day in the free version, using the voices your computer already has. Pro, a one-time purchase, removes the limit and adds highlight export to Markdown and reading statistics.

Questions

Is my book uploaded anywhere?

No. This site is static files with no server of its own, so there is nowhere to upload to. The file is opened by the browser and stored by the browser.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, it runs in a phone browser and the library and the reading page are laid out for small screens. A book you add on your phone stays on that phone.

Can I open a book from Google Drive?

Yes, with the Drive version of the same reader. How that works

What do the free classics cost?

Nothing. They are public-domain editions from Standard Ebooks, included with the reader, and you can hide the shelf if you do not want it.
