EPUB Reader › Guides · Updated November 2026
EPUB Reader & Viewer is an alternative to the EPUBReader extension for Chrome and Chromebook: it also opens MOBI, AZW3, FB2, comics and Word files, and has free highlights and notes, search, a dictionary and built-in read aloud. EPUBReader is the best-known EPUB extension for Chrome; ours is updated regularly, free with an optional one-time Pro, and it is our product.
The names are close, the products are not related. EPUBReader is made by another developer, who has nothing to do with this site.
The EPUBReader column comes from its Chrome Web Store page and from the code of its version 2.1.1, the one on the store, checked on 3 November 2026.

No. There is no server behind the reader: the file is read in your browser and kept there. Looking up a word or using Google's online read-aloud voices sends only that text, and only when you ask for it.
No. The whole reader works without paying. Pro is a one-time purchase that adds unlimited read aloud, sync between computers, highlight export to Markdown and reading statistics.
Yes. The web reader is the same reader on a page, with no account. Drop a book on it and see whether you like it.
Yes. It is a Chrome extension, and the same reader opens books from Google Drive through Open with and can be installed as an app.
No. It does not import highlights or reading positions; you open your books again and start with an empty library.
